Materials:

Batting: 60” x 60”
Quilting ruler
Rotary cutter
Cutting mat
Coordinating thread
1/4″ quilting foot
Baby Lock quilting machine

Fabric Requirements:

Dark fabrics: 2 yards (assorted darks)
Light fabric: 1 1/2 yards
Backing: 3 5/8 yards
Binding: 1/2 yards

Cutting Instructions:

Scrappy Dark Fabrics:

From dark fabrics, cut (28) 2 1/2″ x WOF strips from various dark fabrics.

From 1 strip, cut (16) 2 1/2″ squares (block center).
From 2 strips, cut (16) 4 1/2″.
From 3 strips, cut (16) 6 1/2″.
From 4 strips, cut (16) 8 1/2″.
From 4 strips, cut (16) 10 1/2″.
From 6 strips, cut (16) 12 1/2″.
From 8 strips, cut (16) 14 1/2″.

Light Fabrics:

From light fabrics, cut (20) 2 1/2″ x WOF strips.

From 1 strip, cut (16) 2 1/2″ squares.
From 2 strips, cut (16) 4 1/2″.
From 3 strips, cut (16) 6 1/2″.
From 4 strips, cut (16) 8 1/2″.
From 4 strips, cut (16) 10 1/2″.
From 8 strips, cut (16) 12 1/2″.

Optional: You may also use a variety of light fabrics instead of one solid.

Note: This pattern has 16 blocks. Before you begin cutting, select 1 dark strip to be the center square of your blocks. Then, lay out your colors and decide which strips will be used for which cutting measurement. Shorter cuts will be on the inside of your block with the longer strips toward the outside.

All seam allowances are 1/4″. To achieve the correct seam allowance, use your Baby Lock 1/4″ quilting foot. When stitching, line up the raw edge of your fabric with the right side edge of the quilting foot and you will get an accurate 1/4” seam allowance every time. Set your Baby Lock sewing machine stitch length to 2.5. This will ensure your pieces are stitched securely.

Piecing Instructions:

BLOCK PIECING:

Sew (1) 2 1/2″ dark square to (1) 2 1/2″ light square. Press seam toward dark fabric.
With the dark square on the left, sew (1) 4 1/2″ light to bottom. Press seam out toward light.
Sew (1) 4 1/2″ Dark to left side. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 6 1/2″ Dark to top. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 6 1/2″ Light to right. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 8 1/2″ Light to bottom. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 8 1/2″ Dark to left. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 10 1/2″ Dark to top. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 10 1/2″ Light to right. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 12 1/2″ Light Fabric to bottom. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 12 1/2″ Dark to left. Press seam out.
Sew (1) 14 1/2″ Dark Fabric to top. Press seam out.
Repeat to make a total of 16 blocks.
Sew blocks together to form rows, following the Quilt Top Assembly Diagram. Press seams in each row in direction of arrows.
Sew rows together to complete your quilt top. Baste, quilt and bind in your desired method. Press seams in one direction.
