Piecing Instructions:

ASSEMBLY:

  1. Cut selvages off all fabric strips.
  2. Sew strips together, side by side in the order shown to create a slab measuring WOF x 40 1/2”. Press the seams open. (Order shown is light blue, dark blue, pink, yellow, green, and it repeats for a total of four sets.)

  3. Sew the left and right ends of the slab to each other (the light blue on the left to the green on the right), creating a loop. Press the seam open.
  4. Lay the loop flat with the seams horizontal. Take your time to make sure the seams are straight. The fabric strips will lay RST.
  5. Cut the looped strips vertically, cutting perpendicularly through the horizontal seams, into (20) loops in the following widths:
    1. (6) 2 1/2″ wide
    2. (10) 2″ wide
    3. (4) 1 1/2″ wide
  6. Lay out the looped strips in this order, from left to right (keeping the seams horizontal):
    1. 2 1/2″
    2. 2 1/2″
    3. 2″
    4. 2″
    5. 1 1/2″

    19. 2 1/2″
    20. 2 1/2″

  7. Gently remove the seam between the following colors in each looped strip so it lays flat with the right side up. In each column, the fabric listed first will be the topmost fabric in the quilt top:
    1. light blue-green
    2. dark blue-light blue
    3. pink-dark blue
    4. yellow-pink
    5. green-yellow

    17. green-yellow
    18. light blue-green
    19. dark blue-light blue
    20. pink-blue
  8. Press the fabrics of the recently removed seam edges flat.
  9. Pin a safety pin or other marked organizing device on the top of each vertical strip to make sure they stay oriented correctly while sewing. Keeping the columns labeled 1-20 will also be helpful.

  10. Sew the strips together, side-by-side, matching horizontal seams. Use caution with the ends of the horizontal seams so they don’t come unsewn. Pinning at each seam will help stabilize them. Press the seams to the right or open.

FINISHING THE QUILT:

  1. Sew the strips together, side-by-side, matching horizontal seams. Use caution with the ends of the seams so they don’t come unsewn. Pinning at each seam will help stabilize them. Press the seams to the right or open.
  2. Quilt using your preferred method and design. Following the direction of the bargello curves will help emphasize them. Trim the batting and backing to match the quilt top.
  3. Sew the (4) binding strips RST, end-to-end, with diagonal seams to make (1) continuous binding strip.
  4. Sew the binding around the edge using your preferred method.
