Brush off your fussy cutting skills, because we know you won’t be able to resist making this quilt pattern. New from Brenda Plaster, this quilt pattern finishes at a 30 1/2-inch square and would make a stunning mini quilt, table topper, or wall hanging. Taking inspiration from classic medallion quilts, which feature a design focused around a center motif, this small quilt pattern will make a beautiful addition to your home.
Finished Size: 30-1/2” x 30-1/2”
Designer Note: Please read the entire pattern before starting your project.

PATCH SUMMARY:
Do not cut from this summary; see Fabric Requirements and Cuts. Patch descriptions refer to sizes/shapes used to construct patches, not the finished patch sizes/shapes.

A: 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” rectangle: 4 A1
B: 2-1/2” square: 32 B2
C: 2-1/2” square: 16 C1
D: 6-1/2” square: 1 D3
E: 2-1/2” x 10-1/2” rectangle: 4 E4
F: 2-1/2” x 14-1/2” rectangle: 4 F5
G: 2-1/2” x 18-1/2” rectangle: 4 G6
H (border post): 2-1/2” square: 4 H1
Fabric estimates are based on usable fabric width (selvage to selvage) of at least 42”. Add yardage if you prewash your fabrics or are fussy-cutting.
This is a great pattern to use 2 1/2″ strips from jelly rolls or your stash.
This pattern assumes you’re buying fabric specifically for this project, so cuts are WOF (width of fabric) to save fabric. In the patch labels (see Patch Summary), the letter refers to the patch. The number refers to the fabric from which it is cut. For example, A1 is an A patch cut from Fabric 1.

Fabric Requirements and Cuts:
Fabric 1: 1/4 yard
- A1: Cut WOF [1] 2 1/2″ strip. From this, cut [4] 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips.
- C1 and H1: Cut WOF [2] 2 1/2″ strips. From these, cut:
- [16] 2 1/2″ C1 squares and [4] 2 1/2″ H1 (border posts) squares.
Fabric 2: 1/2 yard
- Outer border: Cut WOF [3] 2 1/2″ strips or [4] 2 1/2″ strips to avoid border seams.
- B2: Cut WOF [2] 2 1/2″ strips. From these, cut [32] 2 1/2″ squares.
Fabric 3: 1/4 yard, Fat Quarter, or scrap
- D3: From a panel, image printed on fabric, or large-scale print fabric, fussy-cut [1] 6 1/2″ square.
Fabric 4: 1/4 yard
- E4: Cut WOF [1] 2 1/2″ strip. From this, cut [4] 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ rectangles.
Fabric 5: 1/4 yard
- F5: Cut WOF [2] 2 1/2″ strips. From these, cut [4] 2 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ rectangles.
Fabric 6: 1/4 yard
- G6: Cut WOF [2] 2 1/2″ strips. From these, cut [4] 2 1/2″ x 18 1/2″ rectangles.
Fabric 7: 1/3 yard
- Inner border: Cut WOF [3] 2 1/2″ strips (or [4] 2 1/2″ strips to avoid border seams).
Binding: 3/8 yard
- Cut enough 2 1/4″ or 2 1/2″ (your preference) bias or straight of grain strips to join and make about 132” binding. (The same fabric is used as Fabric 2 and Binding in the illustrated quilt.)
Backing: 1 1/8 yards
- Backing 4” larger than the quilt top on all sides is recommended for longarm quilting (38 1/2″ square). 1 1/8 yards makes a 40 1/2″ x WOF backing.
Piecing Instructions:
All seams are 1/4″. Press seams as indicated in instructions/illustrations or open. You may need to reorient some seams when joining units to enable the seams to nest.
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of [8] 2 1/2″ Fabric 2 squares. Line up with edges of A1 rectangles as shown. Sew on drawn line. Trim seams to 1/4″. Press seams toward B2. Make [4] AB units.

- Sew [1] AB unit to each side of D3 and press seams.
- Sew [1] C1 to each side of the remaining [2] AB units to make [2] 10-1/2” x 2-1/2” top and bottom rectangles. Press seams.
- Sew [1] rectangle each to the top and bottom of the D3 unit and press seams. The quilt center now measures 10 1/2” square.

- In the same way you made the units in Step 1, make [4] each of the illustrated units: EB, FB, and GB. Set aside [2] of each as block side units.

- Sew [1] C1 to each side of the remaining EB, FB, and GB units to make block top and bottom units. Make [2] of each. Press seams outward (toward C1).

- Sew [1] C1 to each side of the remaining EB, FB, and GB units to make block top and bottom units. Make [2] of each. Press seams outward (toward C1).
- Alternating side units and top and bottom units, sew EB, FB, and GB units in alphabetical order to the quilt center as shown to complete the 22 1/2″ square block. Press seams outward (away from center).

- Joining strips if necessary, make [4] 22 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips from Fabric 7. Sew [1] 22 1/2” x 2 1/2” strip to each side of the block and press seams toward the strips. Sew [1] H1 (border post) to each side of the remaining [2] strips. Sew [1] each to top and bottom of the block to complete the inner border. Press seams toward the border. The quilt should measure 26 1/2” square.
- Joining outer border strips if necessary, make [2] 26 1/2” x 2 1/2” strips and [2] 30 1/2” x 2 1/2” strips. Sew [1] 26 1/2” x 2 1/2” strip to each side of the block and press seams toward the border strips. Sew [1] 30 1/2” x 2 1/2” strip each to the top and bottom of the block to complete the quilt top. Press seams toward the border. The quilt top should measure 30 1/2” square.
- Layer top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired. Bind with binding.
This pattern was tested by Dorothy McPherson. Thank you!
I love it!! It would also be great in patriotic colors!
