Mocha Friendship Star Quilt Block

Beginner quilters, you’re going to love this one! Friendship stars are a classic quilt block that are simple to sew and easy to customize. Learn how to make your own sweet friendship star block with designer Ann Butler. Finish your friendship stars with embroidery, make them in wild color combinations, or create a traditional quilted pillow or throw with this easy quilt block pattern.

Materials:

  • Cotton print fabric: Light, Dark
  • Thread

Tools:

  • Sewing machine
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Scissors
  • Washing machine
  • Dryer

Instructions:

  1. Cut two 3” squares from light fabric.
  2. Cut five 2 1/2” squares from light fabric.
  3. Cut two 3” squares from dark fabric.
  4. Draw a line from point to point on the back side of the two light fabric squares .
  5. Layer right sides of light and dark fabric squares together. Stitch a 1/4” on either side of the drawn line.
  6. Cut on the drawn line using a ruler and rotary cutter.
  7. Iron from the back side toward the dark fabric. Turn square over and iron from the front side. Repeat for the rest of the squares.
  8. Using a ruler and rotary cutter trim blocks to 2 1/2” being sure to have the 45-degree angle on the seam line.
  9. Arrange the squares to for a block as show in photo.
  10. Stitch the row together as shown in photo.
  11. Sew rows one and two together (see photo below).
  12. Stitch row three to row two.

Designer Tips:

  • Pre-wash all of your fabric.
  • Iron your fabric before cutting.
  • Use a 1/4” seam allowance throughout.
