The classic bow tie block is transformed into an attention-grabbing design with this throw quilt pattern from Brenda Plaster. Measuring at a 55 1/4 inch square, this bow tie quilt pattern also uses a 9-patch block to create its dramatic look, making it an excellent choice for bold color palettes like our sample. Complete your throw quilt with a coordinating outer border in a playful, eye-catching print.
Finished Size: 55 1/4″ x 55 1/4″

PATCH SUMMARY:

Do not cut from this summary; see Fabric Requirements and Cuts. Patch descriptions refer to sizes/shapes used to construct patches, not the finished patch sizes/shapes.

Blocks 2-5 are very similar, so you can begin with a “base” block. Block 2 is the base block as shown above.
Triangles are added to the corners of the base blocks to complete Blocks 3-5, illustrated below.

Fabric estimates are based on useable fabric width (selvage to selvage) of at least 42”. Add yardage if you prewash your fabrics or are fussy-cutting.
Cuts across the fabric width are indicated as WOF (width of fabric). Some cuts are lengthwise (parallel to selvage) to enable lengthwise border cuts. This avoids distorted/wavy borders, as fabric does not stretch on the lengthwise grain.
In the patch labels (see Patch Summary), the letter refers to the patch. The number refers to the fabric from which it is cut. For example, A1 is an A patch cut from Fabric 1.

Fabric Requirements and Cuts:
Fabric 1: 1-3/8 yards
- A1: Cut WOF [4] 4” strips.
- E1: Cut WOF [4] 4” strips.
- D1: Cut WOF [5] 2-1/4” strips.
Fabric 2: 1-1/4 yards
- C2: Cut lengthwise of fabric [1] 4” strip.
- Cut strip in half to make 2 half strips.
- D2: Cut lengthwise of fabric [8] 2-1/4” strips.
- Inner border: Cut lengthwise of fabric [5] 2-1/4” strips.
- B2: Cut lengthwise of fabric [2] 2-1/4” strips.
Fabric 3: 1/2 yard
- D3: Cut WOF [5] 2-1/4” strips. Cut 1 strip in half to make 4 full and 2 half strips. (One half strip will not be used.)
Fabric 4: 1/2 yard
- F4: Cut WOF [3] 4” strips. From these, cut [24] 4” x 4” squares.
Fabric 5: 1-1/2 yards
- Outer border: Cut lengthwise of fabric [4] 4-1/4” strips if sewing straight border seams, 5 if sewing bias border seams.
- Binding: From remaining fabric, cut enough 2-1/4” or 2-1/2” (your preference) bias or straight of grain strips to join and make about 236” binding.
Backing: 3-5/8 yards
- Backing 4” larger on all sides than the top is recommended for longarm quilting (63-1/4” x 63-1/4”). Cut fabric into two equal lengths, and join to make a 65-1/4” x 83-1/2” backing. (Length is more if fabric is wider than 42”.)
Piecing Instructions:
All seams are 1/4”. Press seams as indicated in instructions or illustrations. Or there’s the option of pressing seams open.
- Join 4” Fabric 1 and 2-1/4” Fabric 2 strips as shown below. Sew 2 strip sets. Cut across strip sets at 4” intervals. Cut 16.
- Join 4” Fabric 2 and 2-1/4” Fabric 3 half strips as shown below. Sew 1 strip set. Cut across strip set at 2-1/4” intervals. Cut 8.

- Join 4” Fabric 2 and 2-1/4” Fabric 3 half strips as shown below. Sew 1 strip set. Cut across strip set at 2-1/4” intervals. Cut 8.
- Join units made in Step 1 as shown to complete 8 Block 1 blocks measuring 9-1/4” x 9-1/4”.

- Join 4” Fabric 1 and 2-1/4” Fabric 2 strips as shown. Sew 2 strip sets. Cut across strip sets at 2-1/4” intervals. Cut 34.

- Join 2-1/4” Fabrics 1, 2 and 3 strips as shown below. Sew 2 strip sets of each variation. Cut across strip sets at 2-1/4” intervals. Cut 34 from each variation.

- Join 2-1/4” Fabrics 1 and 3 strips as shown at right. Sew 1 strip set. Cut across strip set at 2-1/4” intervals. Cut 17.

- Join the units made in Steps 4 and 5 as shown to make [17] 5-3/4” x 9-1/4” rectangles.
- Sew the units made in Step 3 to top and bottom of these units to complete [17] 9-1/4” x 9-1/4” blocks. Eight blocks are Block 2 blocks and 9 are base blocks for Blocks 3-5.

- Sew the units made in Step 3 to top and bottom of these units to complete [17] 9-1/4” x 9-1/4” blocks. Eight blocks are Block 2 blocks and 9 are base blocks for Blocks 3-5.
- Draw a diagonal line on wrong sides of F4 squares and align right side down on edges of base blocks as shown. Sew on drawn line. Trim excess fabric, leaving 1/4” seam. Press seams outward.

- Paying attention to the blocks’ orientation and placement, join blocks in rows as shown. Press seams so they interlock when rows are joined.
- Paying attention to the row’s orientation and placement, join rows to complete quilt center. Press seams in either direction.

- Paying attention to the row’s orientation and placement, join rows to complete quilt center. Press seams in either direction.
- Measure length of quilt. Cut 2 inner border strips to this length. Sew to sides of quilt. Measure width of quilt. Cut 2 inner border strips to this length. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Add outer border in the same way. Press seams toward borders.
- Layer top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired. Bind with binding.
