One of the classic blocks that all beginner quilters encounter is the traditional pinwheel. If you’re new to quilting and are searching for a simple block to start with, don’t miss this easy pinwheel block pattern from Ann Butler. Make a striking pinwheel block (like the one shown in cream and turquoise) and experiment with block sizes and layout.
Materials:
- Cotton print fabric: Light, Dark (Fat Eighth or 1/8 yard for each color)
- Thread
Tools:
- Sewing machine
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Pins
- Iron
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Scissors
- Washing machine
- Dryer
Instructions:
- Cut two 4” squares from light fabric.
- Cut two 4” squares from dark fabric.
- Draw a line from point to point on the back side of the two light fabric squares.
- Layer right sides of light and dark fabric squares together. Stitch a 1/4” on either side of the drawn line.
- Cut on the drawn line using a ruler and rotary cutter.
- Iron from the back side toward the dark fabric.
- Using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim block to 31/2” being sure to have the 45-degree angle on the seam line.
- Arrange blocks as shown in photo.
- Nest seams together and stitch on side of two block.
- Repeat for other two block, see photo.
- Stitch the two sets together.
Designer Tips:
- Pre-wash all of your fabric.
- Iron your fabric before cutting.
- Use a 1/4” seam allowance throughout.
