Materials:
- Fabric Requirements:
- 3 charm packs (or total of 117, 5” scrappy squares – Medium and dark prints)
- 2 1/2 yards of Background (piecing and Border #1)
- 1 1/2 yard for Border #2
- 3/4 yard for binding
- 5 yards for backing
Cutting Directions:
BACKGROUND:
- Cut into 9 strips, 4 1/2” x WOF (Width of Fabric)
- Sub cut into quantity 72, 4 1/2” squares
- Cut into 5 strips 5” x WOF
- Sub cut into quantity 36, 5” squares
CHARM PACKS (117, 5″ SCRAPPY MEDIUM AND DARK SQUARES):
- Separate 5” scrappy squares into three stacks.
- Quantity 36 will be paired with 36 background 5” squares.
- Quantity 45 will need to be trimmed to 4 1/2” squares.
- Quantity 36 (remaining squares) can be cut into 2 1/2” squares or kept as 5” squares.
Pattern will create 9 blocks and will finish 60”x 60” without borders.
Suggested borders:
- Border #1: 2 1/2” cut 2” finished (background) cut 8 strips 2 1/2” x WOF.
- Border #2: 4 1/2” cut 4” finished (print) cut into 8 strips 4 1/2” x WOF.
Piecing Instructions:
MAKE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (HST):
- Draw a diagonal line on the back (wrong side) of 36 background 5” squares.
- Pair 36 background 5” squares with 36 scrappy 5” squares (right sides together).
- Sew 1/4” on either side of the diagonal line.
- Cut on the diagonal line. Each pair of 5” squares will yield two HST’s. You will make a total of 72 HST’s.
MAKE FOUR-PATCHES:
- Pair up your remaining scrappy 5” squares. Each pair (right sides together).
- Sew 1/4” on the left and right sides of the pair.
- Cut in the middle between both seams (2 1/2” mark). (This yields 36, 4 1/2” x 5” units).
- Press units to one side.
- Mix and match pairs created in Step 3 and put right sides together. (Seams created in Step 4 will nest).
- Sew 1/4” on the left and right sides of each pair.
- Cut in the middle between both seams (2 1/2” mark). (This yields 36, 4 1/2” x 4 1/2” four patch units).
MAKE ROWS FOR BLOCKS:
- Row #1: Sew 4 1/2” background square to 4 1/2” HST to 4 1/2” HST to 4 1/2” background square to 4 1/2” background square.
- Row #2: Sew 4 1/2” HST to 4 1/2” four patch to 4 1/2” scrappy square to 4 1/2” four patch to 4 1/2” background square.
- Row #3: Sew 4 1/2” HST to 4 1/2” scrappy square to 4 1/2” four patch to 4 1/2” scrappy square to 4 1/2” HST.
- Row #4: Sew 4 1/2” background square to 4 1/2” to four patch to 4 1/2” scrappy square to four patch square to 4 1/2” HST.
- Row #5: Sew 4 1/2” background square to 4 1/2” background square to 4 1/2” HST to 4 1/2” HST to 4 1/2” background square.
MAKE BLOCK:
- Sew Row #1 to Row #2.
- Sew Row #3 to Row #2.
- Sew Row #4 to Row #3.
- Sew Row #5 to Row #4.
Layout for blocks is 3 x 3. Stars can go all the same direction, or they can be rotated.
Suggested Borders:
- Border #1 – 2” finished (2 1/2” cut) out of background.
- Border #2 – 4” Finished (4 1/2” cut).
