Dazzling Hidden Star Quilt Pattern

Create a gorgeous winter quilt in deep jewel tones with this new pattern from Megan Farrell. Using a hidden star block pattern, this large quilt is an excellent stash-busting project for the end of the year and can be made in baby, lap, throw, and twin quilt sizes. Wrap up your year of quilting with one final pattern made in vibrant shades of peacock blue and burgundy against a backdrop of snowy white.

Fabric Cutting Requirements:

Piecing Instructions:

FOR BLOCK #1:

  1. Snowball bottom left corner of four background 2 1/2″ squares with a 1 1/2″ Accent Square.

  2. Snowball bottom right corner of the same four background 2 1/2” squares (from Step 1) with 1 1/2” Accent Square.

  3. Sew together squares for each row of the block:
    1. 2 1/2″ Scrappy + 2 1/2″ Background (snowball corners at the bottom) + 2 1/2″ Scrappy: Top Row

    2. 2 1/2″ Background (snowball corners on the right side) + 2 1/2″ Scrappy + 2 1/2″ Background (snowball corners on the left side): Middle Row

    3. 2 1/2″ Scrappy + 2 1/2″ Background (snowball corners at the top) + 2 1/2″ Scrappy: Bottom Row

  4. Sew Top Row to Middle Row, then Bottom Row to the opposite side of the Middle Row.

Note: Complete Steps 1-4 (a total of four times) then you will sew the four completed blocks into a four patch (creating the large block that is Block #1).

FOR BLOCK #2:

  1. Sew together a 2 1/2″ Scrappy square to a 2 1/2″ background square. You will complete this step eight times.

  2. You will take your eight pairs from Step 1 in this section and sew them together into 4-patches. You will have four 4-patches (the orange squares here will be referenced as green or blue in Steps 6a and 6c below).

  3. Pick out 4 2 1/2″ scrappy squares. You will sew them into two pairs, then put the pairs together to create a scrappy 4-patch.

  4. Snowball the bottom left corner of four 4 1/2″ background squares with 2 1/2″ Accent square.

  5. Snowball the bottom right corner of four 4 1/2″ background squares (from Step 4 in this section) with 2 1/2″ Accent square.

  6. Sew together squares to create rows for block:
    1. 4-patch from Step 2 + 4 1/2″ background from Step 5 (snowballed corners on the bottom) + 4-Patch from Step 2: Top Row

    2. 4 1/2″ background from Step 5 (snowball corners on the right) + 4-patch from Step 3 + 4 1/2″ from Step 5 (Snowball corners on the left): Middle Row

    3. 4-patch from Step 2 + 4 1/2″ background from Step 5 (snowballed corners on the top) + 4-Patch from Step 2: Bottom Row

  7. Sew Top Row to Middle Row, then Bottom Row to the other side of the Middle Row.

Note: Suggested layout is to alternate Block 1 and Block 2.
