Casserole Hot Pad

This Reversible Strip Quilted Casserole Hot Pad is quick and easy to create and a great way to use up scraps. Once you have made one…you will be hooked! Which is great because they make wonderful gifts too!

Materials:

  • Cotton Batting, 15”x10”
  • Solarize Liner by Fairfield, 15”x10”
  • Fabric,17″ x 12″
  • Fabric Scraps, assorted.

Tools:

  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Scissors
  • Pins, optional

Instructions:

  1. Gather your supplies. Pick a main fabric for one side. Then, if you have strips of left over fabric sort them and see which one will look good with the main fabric you have chosen. If you do not have any left-over fabric cut an assortment of strips between 1 inch and 1 3/4 inch wide. Casserole Hot Pad 1 Strips
  2. Place your main fabric wrong side up, followed by Solarize and the batting. Casserole Hot Pad 2 Layers
  3. Starting with a small strip, place it right side up in the upper left corner (or upper right if you prefer). Add a second strip on top of the first, with right sides facing each other. Stitch with a 1/4-inch seam.
  4. Flip the second strip and trim the excess fabric close to the batting. Press toward second strip.
  5. Continue adding strips right sides together on top of the previous strip, stitch, trim, and press.
  6. Repeat step 5 until the batting is covered.
  7. Press both the front and back.
  8. Trim the main fabric so that it is about 1 inch wider than the stripped layer on top, all the way around.
  9. To create the binding: fold the excess fabric on one side edge in half as shown in the photo.
  10. Fold the excess fabric again covering the raw edge of the quilted side as show in the photo.
  11. Stitch binding in place.
  12. Repeat steps 9-11 to bind the remaining three sides.

Now there is a Scrappy Strip Quilted side…
And a Reverse Quilted side with the main fabric…enjoy!

This is pretty. I do it just a little differently by placing the first strip, which is the longest, diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner and work outward. Seems to lay flatter when done.

I am a very beginner quilter. Can’t wait to try this. What is the longest strip I’ll need? Thank you.

This is a very attractive hot pad, it will dress up our dinner table tonight when I serve cabbage rolls.
