Persimmon Stripe Quilt Pattern

Muted tones for fall? No thanks! Reimagine stripes with this bold and playful fall quilt pattern from Zoe Ballard. Made in colors like persimmon, lime and cobalt, this large quilt pattern has a cool crisscross effect created by the mixing of strip blocks, finishing at 74” x 74”. Cutting Instructions:

Fabric A:

  • Fourteen 1 1/2” x WOF (9 Strip Block)
  • Two 1 7/8” x WOF (Half 9 Strip Block)
  • Eleven 2” x WOF (6 Strip Block)
  • One 2 3/8” x WOF (Half 6 Strip Block)

Fabric B:

  • Eight 1 1/2” x WOF (9 Strip Block)

Piecing Instructions:

MAKING THE BLOCKS:

9 Strip Block:


  1. Lay out the fabric strips in the correct order.
  2. With right sides together, stitch the strips into pairs (and a three). With right sides together, stitch the pairs into sections (a four and a five). With right sides together, stitch the sections together. Press the seams in one direction.
  3. Repeat to make two more lengths of nine strips.
  4. From the three lengths, cut ten 9 1/2” squares.

Half 9 Strip Block:


  1. Lay out the fabric strips in the correct order making sure to use the 1 7/8” Fabric A strips on the outside.
  2. With right sides together, stitch the strips into pairs (and a three). With right sides together, stitch the pairs into sections (a four and a five). With right sides together, stitch the sections together. Press the seams in one direction.
  3. From the length, cut three 10” squares.
  4. With Fabric A at the top (and bottom), cut the three squares in half along the diagonal, bottom right to top left, to create six halves, (five are needed for the quilt).

8 Strip Block:


  1. Lay out the fabric strips in the correct order.
  2. With right sides together, stitch the strips into pairs. With right sides together, stitch the pairs into sections of four. With right sides together, stitch the sections together. Press the seams in one direction.
  3. Repeat to make two more lengths of eight strips.
  4. From the three lengths, cut ten 9 1/2” squares.

Half 8 Strip Block:


  1. Lay out the fabric strips in the correct order, making sure to use the 2” Fabric B and C strips on the outside.
  2. With right sides together, stitch the strips into pairs. With right sides together, stitch the pairs into sections of four. With right sides together, stitch the sections together. Press the seams in one direction.
  3. From the length, cut three 10” squares.
  4. With Fabric B on the left, cut the three squares in half along the diagonal, bottom left to top right, to create six halves (five are needed for the quilt).

  1. Stitch the blocks into the 10 diagonal rows and press the seams of each row in opposite directions.
  2. Stitch the rows into pairs, nesting the seams, then stitch the pairs together. Press the seams in one direction.

MAKING THE INNER BORDER:

  1. Join two 1 1/2” strips of Fabric C.
  2. Find the middle of the long strip and, with right sides together, pin it to the middle of the quilt top. Pin along the length so the border fabric overhangs each side.
  3. Stitch from 1/4” at the top to 1/4” from the bottom of the seam.
  4. Leave the long ends but pin out of the way so they are not caught in the next seam.
  5. With right sides together, stitch the three other borders in the same way. Press towards the border.

TO MITER THE CORNERS:

  1. Fold the quilt top in half diagonally, right sides together, lining up the raw edges of the border strips. Follow the diagonal fold to draw a line on the border strip from the end of the stitches. Stitch along the drawn line. Cut the excess border fabric to give 1/4” seam allowance, press the seam in one direction.

MAKING THE OUTER BORDER:

  1. Repeat the method for the inner border using the 3 3/4” Fabric B strips.

QUILTING:

  1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and quilt as desired. Zoe stitched in the ditch, into the borders, along the diagonals and between the inner and outer borders.

BINDING:

  1. Join the eight 2 1/2” Fabric C strips along the short ends to make the binding.
  2. Use the long length to double bind the quilt.
