Scrappy Stars and Diamonds Quilt Pattern

Love creating beautiful stashbusting projects? Megan Farrell’s newest quilt pattern is perfect for using up small scraps of fabric to create this pattern’s central tiny 16 patches. This throw quilt pattern uses a combination of sawtooth stars and diamonds to create its blossom-like pattern and would look stunning in rich autumnal shades to mimic fall blossoms like mums or sunflowers. The designer also provides a helpful chart so that you can easily adjust your materials as needed for your desired quilt size.

Fabric Requirements:

Materials:

Fabric Yardage Requirements:

  • Background: 1 3/4 yards
  • Accent: 1/2 yard
  • Scrappy 2 1/2” squares: Quantity: 144
  • Scrappy 1 1/2” squares: Quantity: 192

Cutting Instructions:

Background:

  • Qty 12  4 1/2” strips
    • 48 each: 4 1/2” Squares: 4 per block
    • 96 each: 2 1/2” x 4 1/2”: 8 per block

Accent:

  • Qty 6  2 1/2” strips
    • 96 each: 2 1/2” squares: 8 per block

Piecing Instructions:

  1. Create center of block. Randomly choose (16) 1 1/2” scrappy squares, and sew into a 4 x 4 block.

  2. Create corners of block. Randomly choose (4)  2 1/2” scrappy squares. On four of your corner background pieces (4 1/2” background squares), you will snowball one corner of each block.

  3. Create star points. You will repeat this step four times per block. You will need (2) background 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles. Select (2) accent 2 1/2” squares and randomly choose (2) scrappy 2 1/2” squares. At the bottom of both background rectangles, you will snowball your accent 2 1/2” squares, in opposite directions. Then at the top of both Background rectangles, you will now ball the corners with your scrappy 2 1/2” squares. Once your pieces are snowballed and pressed, you will sew the two rectangles together on the 4 1/2” side. Your Snowballed scrappy corners should touch creating a V. Your snowballed accent corners should only touch at the points, creating your star points.

  4. Piece block like a 9-patch, your 16-patch in the center, your corner blocks in all the corners with the snowballed corners on the outside corner of the block. Your point blocks will touch the 16-patch center block, with the accent color touching the 16-patch block and the scrappy V on the outside of the block.

  5. Once all 12 blocks are constructed, you will lay them out in a row of 3 blocks and a column of 4 blocks and sew together.

Note: Borders can be added or left out depending on the look you want. Without borders, this lap quilt will be 36” x 48”.
