Made using the classic 16 patch block, these quilted hot pads are a quick and easy quilting project that finish at an 8” x 8” octagon. Designer Connie Kauffman has also included a 4 patch variation, which features strip borders in delightful autumnal prints. Break out your brilliant red, orange, yellow and brown fabric scraps to create these vibrant kitchen hot pads.
16 Patch Hot Pad
Finished Size: 8” x 8”
Materials:
- 16 different squares 2 1/2” x 2 1/2”
- 2 squares of cotton batting 9” x 9”
- Backing fabric 9” x 9”
Instructions:
- Lay out the square into 4 rows of 4.
- Sew the blocks into rows. Use a 1/4” seam allowance when sewing.
- Sew the rows together.
- Trim each corner on the diagonal.
- Layer the two pieces of cotton batting, backing face up and pieced top face down.
- Pin baste around the outside edge.
- Sew around the outside edge leaving an opening for turning.
- Trim around the outside edge and clip corners.
- Turn inside out and sew the opening closed.
- Press and quilt as desired.
4 Patch Hot Pad
Finished Size: 8” x 8”
Materials:
- 4 different squares 2 1/2” x 2 1/2”
- 2 different strips 2 1/2” x 8 1/2”
- 2 strips 2 1/2” x 4 1/2”
Instructions:
- Sew four squares together as shown and sew a 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” strip to each side. Use a 1/4” seam allowance when sewing.
- Sew the 2 1/21/2 x 8 ½” strips to the top and bottom.
- Layer the 2 squares of cotton batting, backing face up and pieced top face down.
- Pin baste around the outside edge.
- Sew around the outside edge leaving an opening for turning.
- Trim around the outside edge and clip corners.
- Turn inside out and sew the opening closed.
- Press and quilt as desired.
