Skill Level: Easy

Seam Allowances: 1/4”

Finished Quilt Block: 12 inches

Designer Notes: This quilt block design is crafted using squares and “flying geese” units, which come together to create an eight-point star within a quilt block. This pattern is sometimes recognized as the Evening Star Quilt Block or referred to as a nine-patch quilt block.

Materials:

  • Fabrics:
    • Fabric #1: Cut one 6 1/2” Square for Center Block
    • Fabric #1: Cut four 3 7/8” Squares
    • Fabric #2 Cut four 3 1/2” Squares
    • Fabric #2 Cut 1 7 1/2” Square
  • Iron On Adhesive like HeatnBond Lite
  • Thrifted or existing t-shirt (Stable knit works best, think sweatshirt or tee with low stretch)

Instructions:

  1. Start by cutting out all fabric pieces for the quilt block as outlined under Materials above.

  2. Begin by making the flying geese blocks. Take the four 3 7/8” squares of Fabric #1 and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each square.

  3. Layer two of these squares over the large 7 1/2” square with right sides together and pin in place.

  4. Sew 1/4” down each side of the line you drew.

  5. Cut along the line you drew to make two pieces. Open up and press the seam allowance to one side.

  6. Layer another marked 3 7/8” square on top as shown. Pin.

  7. Just like in Step 4, sew 1/4” on each side of the line and cut along the line you drew. Repeat with the other pieces and sides. Press the seam allowances.

  8. Layout these blocks into three rows.

  9. Sew each of the rows, press and trim.

  10. Sew the three rows together and press.
  11. Now to fuse your new quilt block to the tee. To turn the quilt block into an iron-on applique, cut a square of iron-on adhesive the size of your quilt block.

  12. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, apply the adhesive to the wrong side of the quilt block. Then heat press onto the t-shirt.

  13. The final step is to topstitch the quilt block around all four edges to secure the quilt block to the t-shirt.

Wear and Enjoy!
