Designed by Marian Edwards, this pretty patchwork doll quilt pattern finishes at 12 1/4” x 15 3/4”, making it a perfect fit for American Girl or Our Generation dolls. This doll quilt pattern can be made using fabric scraps or fat eighths and fat quarters and is a lovely gift idea for birthdays or holidays.

Designer Notes:
- I love designing and making scrappy little doll quilts ~ the scrappier, the better. I hope you enjoy making this scrappy little quilt as much as I did.
- I will often use leftover fabric scraps from other projects, and I suggest you do the same; in which case, you will only need to stock up on a few fat eighths and fat quarters.
- For best results, all quilt fabrics, including the batting, need to be 100% cotton. My personal favorites are reproduction fabrics and homespun plaids.
Materials:
- 1/4 yard of a light print for block backgrounds
- 8 assorted medium/dark blue prints – at least 3” x 6” each, for HST (half square triangles) blocks
- 5 light/medium pink prints – at least 3” x 3” each, for blocks
- 2 medium/dark maroon prints – at least 3” x 3” each, for blocks
- 6 medium/dark purple prints – at least 3” x 3” each, for blocks
- Backing – 15” x 19”
- Cotton batting – 14” x 18”
- Binding (single fold) – 1 1/4” x 60”
- Quilting thread of choice (the designer chose Gutermann cotton 30 – taupe)
- Hera marker or marker of choice
- Quilting needle
- Quilting clips (optional)
Instructions:
Note: Please read all the instructions before you start cutting into your precious fabrics.
The quilt top is constructed from Half Square Triangles (HST’s) and Four Patch blocks. Cutting measurements include a 1/4” seam allowance.
TO MAKE THE HST’S:
From the 8 blue fabrics, cut: 2 from each print – 3” x 3” (16 squares in total)
From the light background print, cut: 16 – 3” x 3”
- Pair up the blue and the light squares (placing right sides together).
- Draw a diagonal line on the light fabric.
- Sew a scant 1/4” seam on both sides of the pencil line.
- Cut on the pencil line to yield two HST’s.
- Open and press the seams to the dark side.
- Trim each HST to measure 2 1/2” square.
This will yield 32 HST’s – you will need 24 HST’s for the quilt top (three from each print). You will have eight HST’s left over, from which (if you wish) you could make a small pillow to match your doll quilt.
TO MAKE THE FOUR PATCH BLOCKS:
From each of the pink, maroon and purple prints, cut: 4 – 1 1/2” x 1 1/2”
From the light background print, cut: 52 – 1 1/2” x 1 1/2”
- Pair each of the prints with the light background print (place right sides together).
- Sew a scant seam down one side to make one half of a four patch.
- Open and press seams to the dark print.
- Sew two halves together to make a Four Patch block – trim block to 2 1/2” square.
This will yield 26 Four Patch blocks – you will need 24 Four Patch blocks for the quilt top. You will have two Four Patch blocks left over.

Join the rows to complete the quilt top (flimsy).
To finish the quilt, cut listed material pieces below:
- Backing – 15” x 19”
- Cotton batting – 14” x 18”
- Binding (single fold) – 1 1/4” x 60”
FINISHING THE QUILT:
- Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and baste the layers together.
- Quilt as desired ~ the designer prefers to keep the quilting simple.
- Marian used a Hera marker to mark the quilting lines.
- Her preferred quilting thread is Gutermann sulky cotton thread.
- Attach the binding to the quilt and fold over to the back. Slip stitch to back of quilt.
