If you’ve been looking for an excuse to break out your latest charm pack, then look no further than this easy pastel baby quilt. Designed by Connie Kauffman, this baby quilt pattern is made in gorgeous pastel hues like lilac and mint and can also be made with fat quarters. This one block quilt has only three pieces and finishes at a small 39” square.
Designer Notes:
- This pretty pastel baby quilt is an easy one block quilt. The simple block only has 3 pieces, and is easy to piece with cut strips and triangles or to paper piece. Directions here are given on how to paper piece.
- The quilt can be made from two 5” x 5” charm packs (32 pc per pack) with two coordinating fabrics, or from using a variety of scrap fabrics and two coordinating fabrics. It seems like we often have small leftover pieces of fabric, so that is how the directions are given here.
Materials:
- A variety of 64 pastel squares 5” x 5” (Note: If you don’t have a variety of pastel baby prints, you could also use 8 fat quarters of fabric in pink, blue, green, and yellow, and cut eight 5” x 5” squares from each fat quarter)
- 1/2 yd medium purple for sashings and binding
- 5/8 yd white with small pastel prints
- 1 1/3 yd backing fabric
- 47” x 47” batting*
- Note: Hobbs Premium Polyester Batting used in sample.
- Coordinating thread

Cutting Instructions:
- From the medium purple fabric cut:
- 4 strips 5” x 2”
- 2 strips 2” x 27 1/2”
- 2 strips 2” x 39 1/2”
- Cut the white fabric into 2” strips.
Piecing Instructions:
- Take 1 pastel 5” x 5” square (from the 5″ x 5″ template square) and pin it wrong side to the back of a paper piecing pattern (pin it in the # 1 Section).
- Turn so the paper is face up and fold the paper down along the line between Sections 1 and 2.
- Trim the fabric 1/4” from the folded edge of the paper.
- Note: Save the trimmed piece of fabric as this will be used for Section 3.
- Unfold the paper and turn the fabric side up.
- Place a white strip face down over the pastel fabric section so that the white fabric completely covers the pastel section and both cut edges are even.
- Now pin or carefully hold the fabrics together and turn the block over and sew along the line between Sections 1 and 2. Use a small stitch length so the paper will be easy to tear off later.
- Fold the white fabric back, press and trim along the outside edge.
- Turn the fabric side up again and lay the pastel fabric scrap cut off earlier along the edge of the white fabric.
- Pin or carefully hold together and turn the paper side up and sew along the line between Sections two and three with a small stitch length.
- Turn fabric side up and press the pastel fabric back.
- Trim excess fabric and remove paper and your block is finished.
- Complete all 64 paper pieced blocks and layout in the arrangement as shown with the sashing strips.
- Sew rows together first with sashing strips as shown in upper image. Then sew sashing strips to side outer rows and inner rows.
- Layer backing face down, batting and quilt top face up. Baste, quilt, and bind as desired.
